Ontario sets historic minimum fine for repeat health and safety violations

A bill introduced in Ontario has set the minimum mandatory fine for repeat violations of health and safety standards in the province, particularly those convicted of serious and fatal violations.

Employers convicted of more than one violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act resulting in the serious injury or death of a worker within a two-year period can be fined at least $500,000.

In addition to setting the toughest mandatory minimum fines in Canada’s history for health and safety violations, the wide-ranging bill also expands cancer coverage for firefighters, expands job-protected leave for people who become parents through adoption or surrogacy, and expands the requirements for properly fitting personal protective equipment for women in all sectors.
