Construction is set to begin on a highly anticipated gigafactory in St. Thomas, Ontario. The record-breaking facility is valued at $7 billion and will bring jobs and opportunity to the town of 43,000. The new plant is expected to begin production in 2027 and will ramp up with demand.
PowerCo, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, has commenced its recruitment efforts for the facility, which will produce EV batteries, the largest of its kind in the province and country. The facility will begin by hiring hundreds of workers, a figure that will grow to thousands once it is fully operational. “This recruitment campaign is a pivotal step forward as we move closer to breaking ground on what will be Canada’s largest EV facility once completed,” said Norman Wickboldt, Chief Human Resources Officer at PowerCo Canada.
“Electrified transportation is the future, and these jobs offer long-term opportunities for Canadians to be a part of an exciting and innovative clean energy industry.”
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston said that the investment “isn’t just an economic boost; it’s a fundamental transformation for our community. We’re proud to be the home for this exciting new chapter in Canada’s burgeoning EV battery manufacturing sector.”
