The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has chosen a Canadian-led consortium for the first stage of construction on Pearson International Airport’s multi-billion-dollar Long-term Investments in Facilities and Terminals (LIFT) redevelopment project that will see a decade of capital improvements directed at modernizing and expanding the airport into a more sustainable, digitally enabled environment.
The program consists of three key components: the Accelerator phase; the Gateway phase, which will see future expansion to sustain projected growth in demand; and the final phase, which includes the revitalization of infrastructure at terminals one and three, with upgraded passenger-processing areas, commercial spaces, building systems, parking, and groundside access areas.
For the first phase, the Pearson Accelerator Construction Team consists of Kenaidan Contracting Ltd., Alberici Constructors Ltd., Amico Major Projects Inc., and Obayashi Canada Ltd. This team is well known, having worked on more than 170 airport projects worldwide, and will undertake the Accelerator phase and oversee early airside, utility, and building-systems upgrades.
The progressive design-build effort will receive the support of a design joint venture of Egis Canada and Mott MacDonald, as well as architectural and engineering input from Weston Williamson + Partners, WSP Canada and Woods Bagot, collaboration that will expedite decision making and control costs.
“These two major milestones are advancements of Pearson LIFT, investing in vital Canadian infrastructure to position Toronto Pearson to compete well into the future. Reinforcing Canada’s global connectivity is critical to strengthening supply chains and growing Canadian innovation, business, and jobs,” said Deborah Flint, President and CEO, Toronto Pearson.
The bidding process has been opened for major projects at Terminals 1 and 3 as well. Tender documents are posted on the MERX platform, and a shortlist is expected next year.
