Federal measures to support softwood lumber industry

The Canadian government has announced a new strategy to support the softwood lumber industry, with up to $700 million in loan guarantees, $500 million for product and market diversification, and the prioritization of Canadian lumber for federal projects and procurement, as well as new investments in workforce development and support with regards to market expansion and international trade.

The new federal measures were welcomed by the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA), which represents 37 municipalities across the region, as it will benefit from the support to transform the softwood lumber industry in Canada. According to NOMA, the promise “reflects a significant and timely commitment to ensuring the long-term competitiveness of the forest sector.”

“NOMA welcomes this decisive federal action to support the softwood lumber industry and the communities that depend on it,” said NOMA President Rick Dumas. “These measures recognize the vital role of forestry in Northwestern Ontario and across Canada, helping our sector adapt to ongoing trade challenges, protect local jobs, and create opportunities for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.”

Federal funding and support are critical to communities in Northwestern Ontario as they rely on the forest industry for jobs, economic growth, and the strength of their communities, so a “strong, sustainable, and innovative” sector will advance those interests. The measures also emphasize Indigenous-led forestry business development.
