The Sack Company is a turnkey provider of multi-trade mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services and support as well as its rigging, millwright, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), process piping and maintenance solutions for the commercial and industrial markets. The company has become a reputable name in the industry and a contractor of choice for many.
The company’s customers include some of the most recognizable contractors in the industry in addition to private and public entities from the commercial, industrial, government and institutional – such as education and healthcare – sectors.
Director of Business Development Dan Ver Beek knows what differentiates The Sack Company from competitors. “The fact that we do all the trades, as mentioned, and we do them commercially and industrially. There is no one else like us!”
“Being a multi-trade company makes us unique, but all trades working together on a job site, across trade lines whenever necessary, is special. Getting everyone to work in harmony is a great thing to witness,” he said. This collaboration is a forte of The Sack Company.
Whether a project entails new construction, plant renovations and relocations or maintenance and support, the company is a reliable source of multi-trade experience. Its highly-trained professionals share the goal of delivering service of the utmost quality, regardless of how diverse projects may be.
“Sack, or Sack Company, as we now call it, started as H.A. Sack Co., Inc. It started in 1945 as a small residential contractor and grew slowly,” said Ver Beek. Over the next ten years, it grew to five employees and expanded to offer installations of mechanical and electrical systems in homes and small businesses, as well as emergency service to Southeast Georgia.
Unfortunately, Mr. Sack passed away in 1956, leaving the business to his wife who later sold it to his brother-in-law, Albert Roesel, and his partner at the time, Gene Dawson. Together, they continued to develop the business, taking advantage of a growing market and adding to its repertoire of services to include larger commercial, institutional, military and industrial jobs.
As The Sack Company grew, it moved away from residential work and ended its residential sales division in the late 1950s. While its clientele was changing, its assurance of quality workmanship and safety did not.
By 1973, Roesel became the sole owner and set his sights on new horizons, complementing the company’s business services with millwright, rigging, programmable logic control, and maintenance services. To support this growth, the company employed one hundred people.
In the years following, Roesel’s sons, Paul and Philip, were welcomed into the family business after completing their studies at Georgia Southern College. Paul and Philip would play a significant role in the company’s future growth.
The next major move for the company came in 1995. While still going by the name H.A. Sack, it created Sack Company Maintenance, Inc. (SCM, Inc.), a separate entity dedicated to providing HVAC, electrical, plumbing, piping, process controls, rigging and millwright services for manufacturing and process customers.
Paul and Philip assumed full control of the company in 2006 when their father made the decision to step down and retire. He left the company in good hands. From what was once a residential contractor, it matured into a full-service design-build and hard bid contractor with over four hundred employees.
In 2015, H.A. Sack Company and SCM, Inc. joined forces to become The Sack Company, and it is known today as a force to be reckoned with. It has a firm grip on markets in Georgia and South Carolina and an eye on those in North Carolina and Florida.
Ver Beek believes that the secret to the company’s growth “has always been a great desire to produce a quality product on time and produced safety – without injury or harm to the employees.”
Principles of quality and safety are the foundation on which the company was built. Through a comprehensive quality assurance program and assigned quality and safety professionals, such as a full-time safety director, safety procedures are reinforced at all of its job sites and personnel are highly-trained and serious about maintaining a safe work site.
Its culture of safety has led to it being recognized by the industry with awards such as 2014 Associated General Contractors (AGC) award for no lost time accidents. Safety is strengthened through quarterly safety meetings, strong communication and various training programs. On-site training is also available to general contractors.
Employees are the company’s greatest assets. As Ver Beek noted, “without them, we would not be Sack. The professionalism they portray in the field and throughout our organization is what truly makes us who we are. The quality and service they provide to our customers they interact with daily is what keeps our customers coming back.”
Though acquiring such a workforce is a challenge for many contractors in the field, Ver Beek explained how the company is dealing with this issue. “One of the ways we address this is we have approved [Department of Labor] apprenticeship programs for all of our trade and are willing to train/mentor new hires,” and this has proven attractive to many.
“Statesboro is a great place to raise a family in the southeast,” stated Ver Beek. “Sack is a great company in which to work and serve. We are always looking for new talent to support our business model. We provide long-term employment for all who support our business model and work ethic.”
The company is also committed to sustainability and certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). It helps to integrate LEED sustainable principles into the systems it designs, installs and maintains, which improves system performance and environmental stewardship.
It is for all of these reasons that it has been selected to work on projects such as BMW North America’s Greer, South Carolina plant. The Sack Company performed electrical work for this impressive $1 billion facility expansion project.
The project includes the construction of a 527,000-square-foot body shop, an expansion to its X5 and X6 assembly halls totaling 200,000 square feet, a 105,000-square-foot warehouse expansion and two test tracks.
“We have participated in several projects at Georgia Southern, our hometown university, like the Biological Sciences Building or the dining halls, or industrially with WL Plastics, Briggs and Stratton or Viracon,” said Ver Beek.
“MEP services are largely unseen until you walk into a building this time of year and feel the cool air hit you in the face when you open the door to enter, and then walking inside when you flip the light switch and the lights come on, and finally when you go to use any water fountain or restrooms and the water flows as it should, when needed,” he added.
The Sack Company is also a pillar in the community as both an employer and through its philanthropic community outreach efforts. Whether it is a partnership to develop specialized career training programs for local schools or visits to area high schools to raise awareness of the viability of a career in construction, the company is dedicated to the community. In 2016, nearly $40,000 was donated to local charities and in total, since 2009, contributions totaled more than $333,000.
The Sack Company’s lasting relationships have led to its success as a multi-trade contractor. Just as it has done for decades, the plan is to continue to grow in a scalable manner to ensure the level of quality, safety and service offered remains of the highest caliber.
